Custom Cable & Wire Prototyping At Quadrangle ProductsCustom cable prototyping is the process of creating a first pass of a model from a design concept in order to properly test your system with the cable in place. We sometimes call this a first article cable and it can be produced quickly ahead of the balance of an order. Prototypes are a very important part of the design process and it allows businesses to get feedback from stakeholders, retailers, customer test groups, etc. This allows for a design to be tested before being approved for mass production and it can be sent back to the drawing board to incorporate additional changes if necessary Let’s take a look at how custom cable designs move from prototype to production. Steps to Cable Assembly ProductionAfter a prototype has proven to be a successful design, you can move into full production. Here is a breakdown of the different production stages for custom cables. Quoting and sourcingThis is the first step once you have a cable design or we can work with you on the design. A quote is prepared for pricing and lead time on the product based on the initial design. We will go over the materials required to build your cable, and suggest alternatives if it can help improve the design or bring manufacturing costs down. Sometimes the company may require replacing certain materials due to lack of availability or higher costs, but we will explain the options available for your cable. Having an experienced manufacturer greatly benefits as we can easily procure parts even in times of shortages, or suggest substitutes equal in form, fit, and function. Tooling and non-production releaseFor most of our cables there is no difference between the prototype design and the production release. If the cable needs to be updated after the first article is received these changes can be made to the design. For some parts such as FPC (Flexible Printed Circuits), there may be tooling and NRE fees associated with the parts. This varies from part to part, there may be low volume tooling and high volume tooling, or there may only be one tooling that needs to be made. Custom FPC’s normally have a MOQ, but in some cases we can make a separate prototype part using stock kits that can be used to verify pinout and test your system before going into FPC production Production launchA production launch is a stage where the cable assemblies are manufactured on a large scale. Each product is made to the specifications of your custom part, and we can support large volume production. All of our products are 100% tested for continuity in our Quality Control department, and cables that do not pass are not released. The success of a product often depends on how fast the product can be made available to the public. With support from an experienced manufacturer, you can meet deadlines and achieve production goals more efficiently. One common question we get from our clients is “What is the Smallest Pitch Connector You Can Work With?” Here is some helpful information on connector pitches and our products. Guide to Connecter Pitch SizeThe pitch of a connector is the distance measured from the center of one pin to the center of the next pin. It is very important to know the pitch of a connector because otherwise it will not be compatible with the cable or wire you are trying to connect. It can be confusing to match a connector with the other half because nomenclature and standards get mixed and matched.
There are many other pitches out there that are larger and smaller:
What is the Smallest Pitch Connector Quadrangle Has Worked With?Quadrangle has worked with connector Pitches as small as 0.3mm on our SMT mounted connectors. Many common connector pitches that Quadrangle has worked with are 0.5mm, 1mm, 1.25mm, 1.5mm, 2mm and 2.54mm. Quadrangle Pitch Connector SupportQuadrangle strives to support all popular connectors seen on various components and peripherals throughout industry. We are always adding new connectors and crimps/terminals. In some cases we can support new connectors on existing tooling and equipment. In order to confirm this, we may need to purchase sample crimp in REEL FORM (for semi-automated equipment) to test them. Quadrangle will gladly do this, however, if you would like to Expedite This Process — customers are always welcome to inquire with Quadrangle Engineers first (with a spec sheet), and upon Engineer confirming, the customer can supply the crimps to us for testing (REEL FORM ONLY). Customer Supplied Material is often the more efficient and quicker way to confirm if we can support the new connector series for your upcoming cable needs.

What is a Shielded Cable?Shielded cables are electrical cables that contain insulating conductors encased in a standard conductive layer. The shield can be made from strands of braided copper (or a similar metal), a spiral copper tape, or some other conducting polymer. The importance of shielded cables cannot be stressed enough. Shielded cables are usually thicker and more rigid than unshielded cables. They also require greater care when working with them. Shielded cables are most often found in industrial settings and installations where other nearby equipment is likely to generate electromagnetic interference. What is LVDS?Low-Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS) is a technology addressing the needs of today’s high performance data transmission applications. LVDS is an electrical system and can run at very high speeds over inexpensive, twisted-pair, stranded copper cables. These twisted pairs maintain the 100ohm differential impedance required by LVDS data signals. LVDS has become a preferred differential standard due to its capability of delivering high data rates while consuming less power than any other interfacing technologies. LVDS uses high-speed analog circuit techniques to provide multi gigabit data transfers on copper interconnects and is a generic interface standard for high-speed data transmission. This is why the LVDS standard is becoming the most popular differential data transmission standard in the industry. What is Shielded Cable Used For?Shielded cables are used to protect the data being transferred through the cable from degradation by EMI exposure, which is common in data centers, industrial settings, offices, and other settings where computer technology, electrical equipment, or electronic equipment is in heavy use. Is Shielded Cable Needed for LVDS Cable? The need for shielded LVDS cables depends on a number of factors. If the cable is in a high electromagnetic interference environment the LVDS cable may require a shield. The length of the cable could also be a factor, for longer cables a shield may be required. Shielded LVDS Cables From Quadrangle ProductsQuadrangle Products manufactures high quality custom LVDS cable assemblies. Irrespective of the length and purpose, Quadrangle Products can make custom low voltage differential cable assemblies to fit your needs. Quadrangle Products Offers Low Smoke Zero Halogen Wire and CableQuadrangle Products is a leading manufacturer and assembler of cable assemblies and wire harnesses. We use low smoke zero halogen (LSZH) wire and cable in many of our designs. Quadrangle Products stocks common LSZH wire that can be used on display cables such as LVDS, Backlight and Touch cables. On top of creating custom cables and wires, we can also help transition non-LSZH wires to LSZH wires on your current cable assembly while keeping your costs low. We have proudly moved toward providing our customers with halogen-free products in an attempt to be more environmentally friendly and in an effort to provide our wire and cable clients with a safer alternative to the wires and cables that have been the standard in the past. What Are LSZH Cables and Wires?LSZH stands for low smoke zero halogen, and this type of cable and wire emits very low amounts of smoke and emits no toxic halogens when exposed to heat. In the past several years, there has been a noticeable increased awareness and demand for these products as environmentally friendly initiatives have popped up all around the globe. What are Halogens?Halogens are chemicals which use an element from the 17th column of the periodic table as one of their components. In wire and cable compounds, the halogen containing ingredients are typically utilized to impart improved flame retardant properties to polymeric materials, with the most common elements used for this purpose being bromine, fluorine, or chlorine. Why Should You Use LSZH Wires and Cables?LSZH cables and wire should be used when there is an increased risk of heat and fire hazard. There are many advantages of using due to the low smoke, environmental, and toxicity benefits. Cables in communication applications are not exempt from catching fire and can produce harmful smoke and gas, so preventative measures have been taken to make sure that cables are safe too, which is why LSZH cables are becoming more widely used. The clearest uses for LSZH are confined spaces with large amounts of cables in close proximity to humans or sensitive electronic equipment. Submarines and ships are classic examples, which is why the military was one of the first adopters of LSZH standards. Additionally, mass transit and central office facilities are common applications for LSZH, and many telecommunication standards require LSZH cables. LSZH wires and cables are commonly found in:
What is The Difference Between LSF and LSZH cable? While LSF cables and LSZH cables have many of the same design properties and functionality, confusing these two cables could lead to a life threatening situation in the case of a fire. LSF cables are still made using PVC compounds and while they are designed with reduced smoke and hydrogen chloride (HCI) emissions in mind, there are no strict standards in place to confirm the quality of the design. LSZH cables, on the other hand, are subject to very strict standards regarding the amount of HCI emissions they would give off when burning. For this reason, LSZH cables and wires are generally the safer option. Can Low Voltage Zero Halogen Wires and Cable be Used With LVDS Cables?Yes, Quadrangle stocks multiple wires in house for the specific use of LVDS cables such as UL21104 shielded jacketed wire and UL3767 discrete wire. Can Low Voltage Zero Halogen wires and cable be used on DisplayPort Cables?Yes, Quadrangle products will have a wire available soon that will be specifically designed for LVZH DisplayPort Cables that will be available in the spring of 2021. Are LSZH Cables Required in Data Centers?LSZH cables are being used more frequently in data centers because of their safety benefits over other traditional cable designs. In order to figure out whether LSZH cables are required, you will need to look into local building codes as they tend to vary from region to region. Many data centers choose to use LSZH cables regardless of requirements to cut down on the risk of heat and fire hazards. Are LSZH Cables More Expensive?LSZH cables are generally more expensive than similar types of cables and wires. However, with the slightly elevated cost comes an increase in safety and built in protection. When you are considering cable options for a facility that deals with sensitive information, important equipment, or heat-generating computers, such as hospitals, data centers, or military installations, the added cost of LSZH is well worth the safety benefits. |
