What are LVDS Cable Assemblies?
Low-Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS) is a technology addressing the needs of today’s high performance data transmission applications. LVDS is a low voltage differential signaling system which is an electrical system and can run at very high speeds over inexpensive, twisted-pair, stranded copper cables. These twisted pairs maintain the 100ohm differential impedance requires by LVDS data signals. LVDS has become a preferred differential standard due to its capability of delivering high data rates while consuming less power than any other interfacing technologies. LVDS uses high-speed analog circuit techniques to provide multi gigabit data transfers on copper interconnects and is a generic interface standard for high-speed data transmission. This is why the LVDS standard is becoming the most popular differential data transmission standard in the industry.
Benefits of using LVDS Cables
LVDS cables are very popular in electronic communication devices like computers. These cables are of great use in networking as well as in analog video interfacing. The length of data transfer cable assembly can be from 1.00 inch to several meters (6-7) depending on the structure and requirement of the LVDS system. LVDS is currently the only design that combines low power dissipation with high speed.

How does an LVDS system work?
LVDS is a differential signaling system. It transmits two different voltages which are compared at the receiver end of the transmission. LVDS uses the difference in voltage between the two wires to encode the information. This differential data used in LVDS is less susceptible to common-mode noise than the single-ended schemes. Unlike single-ended methods, differential transmission uses two wires with opposite current/voltage swings, to convey data.
The advantage of the differential approach in LVDS is that noise is usually coupled on the two cables equally and is then rejected by the receivers. The receiver looks at only the difference between the two signals. The differential signals also tend to radiate less noise due to the cancellation of magnetic fields generated as compared to single-ended signals. If in-line noise and EMI are a concern, shielding the overall cable assembly, as well as introducing methods such as ferrite beads and drain wires are several ways this can be addressed. Shielding not only helps to clean up any noise created by the LVDS cables but it also prevents other electronic components from “talking” to the cables distorting image quality and cable function.
Uses of LVDS Cables
LVDS cables are the best choice where low power exists and a large amount of data transfer is required. The main application of LVDS system and cables is in computers. Before LVDS cable assemblies were introduced, the data transfer rate was too slow and cables used to occupy more space.
LVDS is now supported by SCSI standards. This allows cable assemblies built for LVDS to support higher data rates and longer cable lengths.
LVDS cable assemblies are also used in video interfacing devices. They are more commonly used for transporting video data from graphics adapters to computer monitors particularly LCD screens, FPD-Link or OpenLDI standards. These standards of LVDS cable assemblies allow a maximum pixel clock of 112 MHz, which suffices for a display resolution of 1400 x 1050 (SXGA+) at 60 Hz refresh. A dual link can boost the maximum display resolution to 2048 x 1536 (QXGA) at 60 Hz. FPD-Link works with cable lengths up to about 5 m, and LDI extends this to about 10 m.
