Custom Flat Flexible FFC Cables

When it comes to finding the right cable for a project, the abundance of options can be overwhelming, especially to those who are not well versed in all the different types of cables and wires out there. FFC Cable (Flat Flexible Cable) is an increasingly popular and necessary type of cable in a world where technology is getting smaller and more compact.

What are Flat Flexible Cables (FFC)?

FFCs (Flat Flexible Cables) consist of multiple flat conductors insulated with a flexible plastic film that is laid out with conductors that are straight. FFCs are available in many pitches such as 0.5mm, 1.00mm and 1.25mm. FFCs typically have a stiffener attached to the opposite side of the contact portion to be inserted into a connector. They are simple one-to-one hookup jumpers found on LCDs, mother boards, touch screens, cameras and other various devices.

Quadrangle Products is a contract manufacturer of wire harnesses and custom cable assemblies, specializing in the design and manufacture of custom cables for flat-panel displays and their peripherals. We support our customer’s needs for any quantity through our design services and quick-turn production. While standard cables may be able to get the job done in certain applications, they can easily fall short when specific connectors or pinouts are needed.

When deciding on the design of your custom cable assembly, there are a few main things to consider. In this blog post, we will review some of the considerations that need to be made during the design stage.

Use Cases for Custom Cable Assembly

Most cable assemblies are used for power or data transmission from one board to another. For power transmission, higher currents will need different conductors and shielding. In cables designed for data transmission, shielding may be needed and twisted pairs can be added to the data pairs. Shielding and/or twisted pairs makes sure data is not corrupted or transmitted incorrectly due to electromagnetic interference. Understanding the basic difference between what is required in a power transmission cable and a data transmission cable will make it much easier to determine what type of wire and covering is best for your project.

Voltage and Current

While always true for power cables, there are electrical requirements for data lines as well, just less significant. When choosing what wire to use there are three main points to think about: the voltage and current requirements, the impedance of the wire, and the wire gauge. All these factors will influence the other, so it is important to consider them.

When needing to make a high-power connection, you will need to know the maximum current and voltage requirements to decide on what gauge wire to use. A higher gauge will be needed the more power you will be drawing from the conductor. If your assembly involves a large run of cable, the impedance of the cable could become a factor. This is most common with a data line where loss can occur over a long distance. This could also lead to poor signal quality, network latency, and increased noise in the signal.

Crimp Considerations

Each connector has specific crimps or terminals that are specified for it, and these crimps have different allowable ranges for wire diameter. Knowing these limitations is important for crimp quality, and ultimately cable quality. While some cable houses may ignore these parameters and use out of spec wire Quadrangle designs cables for the highest crimp quality to produce the best quality cables.

Cable Shielding

Shielded cables are electrical cables that contain insulating conductors encased in a standard conductive layer. The shield can be made from strands of braided copper (or a similar metal), a spiral copper tape, or various shielding tapes.

There are many types of cable shields available commercially, and usage depends on the application.

  • Foil Shields
  • Metallic Braid Shields
  • Tape Shields

Unshielded cable does not utilize shielding to reduce interference. Unshielded cable is typically used for applications where EMI is less of a concern. While offering less protection from interference, unshielded cables are popular because they are:

  • Versatile
  • Inexpensive
  • Lightweight
  • Flexible

shielded lvds cable

Finding standard cable designs has never been easier with facilities producing generic cable designs en masse. While these mass produced off the shelf cables can meet certain needs, they also do not allow for much experimentation and will fall short in more complex applications. Many industries will require more specialized cable assemblies to fit into new technologies.

Custom cable assemblies can be built with superior performance and design when compared to generic models. Custom cable assemblies, manufactured as per the application demands, ensure reliability, providing peace of mind and better returns on investment. Here are five benefits of custom cable assembly.

Higher Quality

Mass produced cables, wires and connectors will often suffer from cost restraints which can negatively impact the quality and longevity. For cable manufacturers, producing only the highest quality cables is not viable because it jacks up the prices and will likely force customers to look for cheaper options.

A custom cable assembly allows you to oversee the quality standards in place, allowing you to create products that comply with regulatory standards. For instance, if your application requires cables to withstand specific temperatures and operate in a chemically-exposed environment, your custom cable manufacturer can test the cables for these parameters before final assembly.

Accurate Design

Custom cables are designed with a specific application in mind, so you know you’ll be getting exactly what you need. In situations where cables need to be color-coded or labeled, it might be impossible to find standard cables that fit your exact needs. Custom cables easily allow these basic customization options. Cable length is also important in most projects, and our cables can be cut to the exact length that is required.

Cable Quantity

With custom cables, custom cable manufacturers can provide you with bulk orders for large projects requiring many cables. You can also be more precise with your order so you don’t end up with too many cables that go to waste or end up in a situation where you don’t have enough cables.

Better Materials

The better and more specific the materials, the better the end result will be. Even in cases where a standard cable could possibly work, you may be making a compromise where a custom cable could be designed to fit your needs perfectly. Cable shielding and jacketing material are also crucial for protecting cables and increasing their longevity and effectiveness. Controlling every aspect of the material used in a custom cable is necessary for critical applications such as those found in the medical industry. In these situations, you can’t afford to have cables fail prematurely and custom cables will help avoid that.

Quadrangle Products is a contract manufacturer of wire harnesses and custom cable assemblies, specializing in the design and manufacture of custom cables for flat-panel displays and their peripherals. We support our customer’s needs for any quantity through our design services and quick-turn production. While standard cables may be able to get the job done in certain applications, they can very easily fall short when it comes to more specific or complex projects.

Many applications in the military, industrial, and medical fields require equipment that needs to be set up without compromise or it could lead to disastrous results. Standard cables often do not provide the highest quality function that is required for projects in these fields. Custom cable assemblies will guarantee that the systems function well and deliver, and are also designed to be compact and perfectly suited to a specific job.

The same high-quality custom cables are also valuable in a handful of different sectors including automotive, utilities, security, telecommunications, aerospace, aviation, and more.

Advantages of Custom Cable Over Standard Cable

Standard cables are standard for a reason. They work well in most basic applications that the average consumer would need. However, there are many situations where the custom cable is the only option to complete a project and that is because the customization offers a much wider range of opportunities where standard cables would simply not work. Some of the advantages of custom cables include:

Better Materials

The better and more specific the materials, the better the end result will be. Even in cases where a standard cable could possibly work, you may be making a compromise where a custom cable could be designed to fit your needs perfectly. Cable shielding and jacketing material are also crucial for protecting cables and increasing their longevity and effectiveness. Controlling every aspect of the material used in a custom cable is necessary for critical applications such as those found in the medical industry. In these situations, you can’t afford to have cables fail prematurely and custom cables will help avoid that.

Higher Performance

Custom cable manufacturers have stringent manufacturing processes, and for this reason, the performance is typically much higher than standard cable models. Custom cable assemblies are designed around your exact product requirements and manufactured to work with your equipment and environment — which means they are also extensively tested with those requirements in mind to ensure a successful finished product that will function and last as expected.

Pitch Connector

What is the Pitch on a Connector?

The pitch of a connector is the distance measured from the center of one pin to the center of the next pin. It is very important to know the pitch of a connector because otherwise it will not be compatible with the cable or wire you are trying to connect. It can be confusing to match a connector with the other half because nomenclature and standards get mixed and matched.

Here are a couple of the most common pitches in metric and standard units:

  • 0.1 inches = 2.54mm (standard for breadboards)
  • 0.05 inches = 1.27mm

There are many other pitches out there that are larger and smaller:

  • 1.20mm
  • 1.25mm
  • 1.50mm
  • 6mm
  • 10mm
  • 0.3in
  • 0.4in

DisplayPort Cables

For a long while now, HDMI cables have been the go-to and most commonplace cable for getting high quality images out of your computer monitors, televisions, and other displays. However, within the last 5 or so years, many high end displays have utilized an even better and more capable cable design, called DisplayPort.

What is DisplayPort and How Does it Work?

At its core, DisplayPort is a digital interface designed to deliver video and audio over a singular cable. Much like HDMI, it can connect a monitor to a data source, like a graphics card, and deliver the video and sound that it's outputting to the display screen.

At the most basic level, DisplayPort works much like any other cable works when connecting a display to a device that will output audio and video, whether it be a laptop, desktop, graphics card. DisplayPort can be used to transmit audio and video simultaneously, although each is optional and can be transmitted without the other.

What is DisplayPort Used For?

The most common use of DisplayPort is in consumer technology. You'll find DisplayPort connectors on high-end PC graphics cards, on certain laptops, and on a number of capable monitors that support higher resolutions and refresh rates.

DisplayPort has a number of advantages from a manufacturing standpoint, from a greater bandwidth to expansive feature sets that can be added to over time, to greater integration with new ports and standards like Thunderbolt. From a consumer's perspective, however, the greatest advantages are in support for higher resolutions and refresh rates, often simultaneously.

Does Quadrangle Work With DisplayPort?

Quadrangle Products Inc. works with a large number of cable types, including eDP (Embedded DisplayPort), DisplayPort, and Mini DisplayPort style cables. Embedded DisplayPort is a high performance audio/visual interface developed through the personal computer industry which allows displays to display in 4k and beyond. eDP cables have become a popular replacement for LVDS display cables which have been the standard since the mid 1990s.

Advantages and Common Uses of eDP Cables

What are some of the advantages of eDP cables over other models and when are they most useful? Here is a brief breakdown to give you a good idea if eDP cables are right for your project.

eDP Cable Advantages

  • Smaller than similar cable varieties
  • Require fewer connections than LVDS assemblies
  • All power, data, and control through one single assembly

eDP Cable Common Uses

  • Laptops
  • Personal Computers
  • HD Displays (monitors, TVs, etc.)

As technology continues to get smaller and gain more functionality, cable technology must also adapt in order to keep up. eDp cables are an example of this quickly changing world of technology. Embedded DisplayPort (commonly referred to as eDP) is based on the VESA DisplayPort Standard. Embedded DisplayPort is a high performance audio/visual interface developed through the personal computer industry which allows displays to display in 4k and beyond. eDP cables have become a popular replacement for LVDS display cables which have been the standard since the mid 1990s.

How To Find the Correct EDP Cable For Your Project

The EDP cable you need for a project will largely depend on the number of pins that they will connect to. A 30 pin EDP cable will obviously not connect with a 40 pin connector, so it’s important to know what you are working with before purchasing EDP cables. If you aren’t sure exactly what you need, the experts at Quadrangle can quickly and easily identify the exact cable design that you need.

What You Should Know About eDP Cables

With a lot of new technology, eDP cables provide benefits that older model cables cannot. Many LCD manufacturers are moving to adding an eDP(Embedded DisplayPort) interface on their LCDs for this very reason. eDP interface allows higher transmission speeds as opposed to LVDS cables. eDP also uses less conductors on your cable design reducing space and possible cost depending on the design.

Another benefit of eDP cables is that they allow you to easily connect your source (such as a personal computer) directly to an LCD. They are also compatible with the DisplayPort standard and Quadrangle has experience building eDP to display port cables. Many eDP cables utilize the IPEX MicroCoax connectors. Quadrangle Products can provide you cable solutions from a MicroCoax to MicroCoax connector or MicroCoax to standard Discrete Wire Connector.

Quadrangle Products can also build Custom eDP or DisplayPort cables if your design requires it. We have strong relationships with many LCD manufactures that utilize the eDP interface and can provide guidance on your cable design. We also offer many Standard Stock eDP cables off the shelf that can ship the same or next day.

Advantages and Common Uses of eDP Cables

Crimping hands

With the level of technology that many companies are utilizing in their infrastructure today, it is important to understand different cable types and what you need in order to keep your infrastructure up and running. Understanding and correctly utilizing shielded and unshielded cables is one of the primary things that will help things function smoothly.

What is a Shielded Cable?

Shielded cables are electrical cables that contain insulating conductors encased in a standard conductive layer. The shield can be made from strands of braided copper (or a similar metal), a spiral copper tape, or some other conducting polymer. The importance of shielded cables cannot be stressed enough.

Shielded cables are usually thicker and more rigid than unshielded cables. They also require greater care when working with them. Shielded cables are most often found in industrial settings and installations where other nearby equipment is likely to generate electromagnetic interference.

There are many types of cable shields available commercially, and usage depends on the application.

  • Combination shields
  • Foil Shields
  • Metallic Braid Shields
  • Spiral Shields
  • Serve Shields
  • Tape Shields

What is Shielded Cable Used For?

Shielded cables are used to protect the data being transferred through the cable from degradation by EMI exposure, which is common in data centers, industrial settings, offices, and other settings where computer technology, electrical equipment, or electronic equipment is in heavy use.

When to Use Unshielded Cable

Unshielded cable does not utilize shielding to reduce interference. Unshielded cable is typically used for office networks and similar network cabling systems. While offering less protection from interference, unshielded cables are popular because they are:

  • Versatile
  • Inexpensive
  • Easy to install
  • Lightweight
  • Flexible

Guidelines for Effective Cable Shielding

  1. Make sure you have a cable with sufficient shielding for the application’s needs. In moderately noisy environments, a foil alone may provide adequate protection. In noisier environments, consider braids or foil-braid combinations.
  2. Use a cable suited to the application. Cables that experience repeated flexing usually use a spirally-wrapped shield rather than a braid. Avoid foil-only shielding on flex cables since continuous flexing can tear the foil.
  3. Make sure the equipment that the cable is connected to is properly grounded. Use an earth ground wherever possible and check the connection between the ground point and the equipment. Eliminating noise depends on a low resistance path to the ground.
  4. Most connector designs allow full 360° termination of the shield. Make sure the connector offers shielding effectiveness equal to that of the cable. For example, many common connectors are offered with metal-coated plastic, cast zinc, or aluminum backshells. Avoid both overspecifying and paying for more than you need or under specifying and getting poor shielding performance.
  5. Ground the cable at one end. This eliminates the potential for noise-inducing ground loops.

A shielded system is only as good as its weakest component. A high-quality cable is defeated by a low-quality connector. Similarly, a great connector can’t do anything to improve a poor cable.

Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) Cable & Wire

With low smoke zero halogen (LSZH) cables becoming more and more popular, we are often asked about their cost compared to other types of cables and wires. Here is some information on these cables’ benefits as well as their cost.

Are LSZH Cables More Expensive?

Compared to PVC cables and other similar cable and wire types, LSZH cables are generally more expensive. However, with the slightly elevated cost comes an increase in safety and built in protection. If you consider the benefits to human health and protecting expensive equipment, the cost can be considered as added insurance for your facility. When you are considering cable options for a facility that deals with sensitive information, important equipment, or heat-generating computers, such as hospitals, data centers, or military installations, the added cost of LSZH is well worth the safety benefits.

Understanding LSZH Cables and Wires

LSZH stands for low smoke zero halogen, and this type of cable and wire emits very low amounts of smoke and emits no toxic halogens when exposed to heat. In the past several years, there has been a noticeable increased awareness and demand for these products as environmentally friendly initiatives have popped up all around the globe.

What are Halogens?

Halogens are chemicals which use an element from the 17th column of the periodic table (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, astatine, and tennessine) as one of their components. In wire and cable compounds, the halogen-containing ingredients are typically utilized to impart improved flame retardant properties to polymeric materials, with the most common elements used for this purpose being bromine, fluorine, or chlorine.

Why Should You Use LSZH Wires and Cables

LSZH cables and wire should be used when there is an increased risk of heat and fire hazard. There are many advantages of using due to the low smoke, environmental, and toxicity benefits. Cables in communication applications are not exempt from catching fire and can produce harmful smoke and gas, so preventative measures have been taken to make sure that cables are safe too, which is why LSZH cables are becoming more widely used.

The clearest uses for LSZH are confined spaces with large amounts of cables in close proximity to humans or sensitive electronic equipment. Submarines and ships are classic examples, which is why the military was one of the first adopters of LSZH standards. Additionally, mass transit and central office facilities are common applications for LSZH, and many telecommunication standards require LSZH cables.

LSZH wires and cables are commonly found in:

  • Data Centers
  • Medical centers and hospitals
  • Aircraft and aviation
  • Rail, subway, and other mass transit systems
  • Industrial locations

While LSF cables and LSZH cables have many of the same design properties and functionality, they also differ from one another in ways that are important to understand when choosing which cable or wire to use for a project. The reason these two cable types are often compared is because they are both relatively new designs that use compounds with the goal of emitting less harmful gasses. In order to understand the differences between the two cable types, it is necessary to break down the theory behind each design.

What are LSF Cables?

LSF stands for “Low Smoke and Fumes.” This type of cable is made up of PVC compound that has been modified to decrease the amount of gas and smoke that is produced when burning compared to traditional PVC designs.

What Are LSZH Cables?

LSZH stands for “low smoke zero halogen.” This type of cable and wire emits very low amounts of smoke and emits no toxic halogens when exposed to heat. In the past several years, there has been a noticeable increased awareness and demand for these products as environmentally friendly initiatives have popped up all around the globe.

What are Halogens?

Halogens are chemicals which use an element from the 17th column of the periodic table as one of their components. In wire and cable compounds, the halogen containing ingredients are typically utilized to impart improved flame retardant properties to polymeric materials, with the most common elements used for this purpose being bromine, fluorine, or chlorine.

LSZH vs LSF Cables: Which Should You Use?

LSF and LSZH cables differ in several important ways. Confusing these two cables could lead to a life threatening situation in the case of a fire. LSF cables are still made using PVC compounds and while they are designed with reduced smoke and hydrogen chloride (HCI) emissions in mind, there are no strict standards in place to confirm the quality of the design. LSZH cables, on the other hand, are subject to very strict standards regarding the amount of HCI emissions they would give off when burning. For this reason, LSZH cables and wires are generally the safer option.

LSF cables have their place as a cost effective alternative to traditional PVC cable, but can still produce a dangerous amount of toxic gas and smoke. In areas that are at high risk of fire or areas that are heavily populated, LSZH is the strongly recommended option. Quadrangle Products uses LSZH cable and wire in many of our designs. MIL-SPEC Connectors

In order to receive a quote for custom Mil-Spec (or Military Specification) cable assemblies, the manufacturer will need detailed information and specifications. The more information you can provide to the manufacturer, the more accurate and robust the quote will be. At Quadrangle Products, there are several key design inputs that are helpful to know before quoting your cable assembly. If you are unsure about certain information, the team at Quadrangle will likely be able to help you figure out what specific design you need. What follows is a breakdown of the specifications you should provide when looking to purchase custom Mil-Spec cable assemblies.

What is the Application of the Cable/Wire?

Mil-Spec cables are designed and built to comply with military specifications. This means the connections are designed to protect against environmental invasiveness, which makes them great for military and aerospace applications, although they can be useful in all sorts of industries.

One of the first things a cable manufacturer should know before providing a custom Mil-Spec cable assembly is what the application of the cable is going to be. Where is the cable going to be used? Are there any constraints that could affect how the cable will function? Sharing as much information and being as specific in your intent will help you receive an accurate quote quickly.

Some of the questions to consider include:

  • What industry is this Mil-Spec cable being used for? (Aviation, Transportation, etc)
  • Is this a custom or existing design?
  • What does the cable do? What is the intent?
  • What is your timeline? When do you need the cables/wires?
  • Are there qualification or test requirements?
  • What quantities are required for samples and production?

What Connectors Do You Need to Use?

A cable's connector is a metal and plastic interconnect that allows the wire's internal copper conductor to be properly mated with the other parts of the assembly. Connectors tend to range in cost and complexity, so it's a good idea to properly match the application with your connector scheme. Some connector systems have lower cost "equivalent" or "sub" options, offering a form, fit, and performance replacement.

  • Manufacturer's P/N
  • Connector type and gender
  • Orientation of the connector
  • Locking and polarization
  • Shielding
  • Overmolded strain relief

Some of the base models in the Mil-Spec connector series that we carry include:

  • D38999

FPDI-1/VESA TYPE/DF9 Cables

Ribbon cables are a type of cable where many conducting wires are running parallel to each other on the same flat plane. With each individual wire laid side by side, they form a wide-flat cable resembling a piece of ribbon, which gives the design it’s name. This kind of cable is most frequently employed in electronic systems that need multiple data buses to link internal peripherals. Ribbon cables are often used when space is a factor because they lay flat and take up very little room.

What Are Ribbon Cables Made Of?

The body of the cable or the “ribbon” itself is typically made from much smaller insulated wires that are bound together to create a long, protracted, flat surface. Wires are generally color-coded in terms of each wire's function, and manufacturers usually also indicate direction by making the top or uppermost wire a particular color, typically red, in order for users to quickly be able to identify which way is up and which is down, for instance. In most cases the cables work through a series of conductors and connectors, and are available in varying sizes depending on their main use.

What Are The Primary Uses For Ribbon Cables?

Ribbon style cables were initially created as a way to facilitate electromagnetic processing within early computer mainframes. The primary design theory with a ribbon-shaped cable is to harness a number of important wires together, and connect them into one. Wires bundled in this way are easier to install and reattach if necessary, and are overall easier to manage within machines.

Ribbon cabling is used for data transmission and communications applications. It is often the cable of choice for computer cable applications, where it is used as internal wiring for hard drives, CD drives, and connecting other parts together. Like FFC cable, Ribbon cables are also commonly used as internal wiring for other electronics and appliances. They can be found in testing and measuring equipment, automated termination equipment, robotics, and pick and place equipment as well.

Low-Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS) is a technology addressing the needs of today’s high performance data transmission applications. LVDS is an electrical system and can run at very high speeds over inexpensive, twisted-pair, stranded copper cables. These twisted pairs maintain the 100ohm differential impedance required by LVDS data signals. LVDS has become a preferred differential standard due to its capability of delivering high data rates while consuming less power than any other interfacing technologies. LVDS uses high-speed analog circuit techniques to provide multi gigabit data transfers on copper interconnects and is a generic interface standard for high-speed data transmission. This is why the LVDS standard is becoming the most popular differential data transmission standard in the industry.

What are LVDS Cables Used For?

LVDS cables are the best choice where low power exists and a large amount of data transfer is required. The main application of LVDS systems and cables is in computers. Before LVDS cable assemblies were introduced, the data transfer rate was too slow and cables used to occupy more space.

LVDS is now supported by SCSI standards. This allows cable assemblies built for LVDS to support higher data rates and longer cable lengths.

LVDS cable assemblies are also used in video interfacing devices. They are more commonly used for transporting video data from graphics adapters to computer monitors, particularly LCD screens, FPD-Link or OpenLDI standards. These standards of LVDS cable assemblies allow a maximum pixel clock of 112 MHz, which suffices for a display resolution of 1400 x 1050 (SXGA+) at 60 Hz refresh. A dual link can boost the maximum display resolution to 2048 x 1536 (QXGA) at 60 Hz. FPD-Link works with cable lengths up to about 5 m, and LDI extends this to about 10 m.

What are the Benefits of LVDS Cables?

LVDS cables are very popular in electronic communication devices like computers. These cables are of great use in networking as well as in analog video interfacing. The length of data transfer cable assembly can be from 1.00 inch to several meters (6-7) depending on the structure and requirement of the LVDS system.

The benefits of LVDS include:

  • Compatible to low-voltage power supply
  • Low noise generation
  • High noise rejection
  • Robust transmission signals
  • Ability to be integrated into system level ICs

FFC Pitch

FFC Cable (Flat Flexible Cable) is an increasingly popular and necessary type of cable in a world where technology is getting smaller and more compact. While “FFC” is a broad term that can be used to describe any cable that is flat and flexible, it usually describes the extremely thin, flat cables found in high-density electronics. Devices such as modern televisions, smartphones, and tablets all utilize FFCs. One of the measurements you might see when describing a flat flexible cable is “pitch”, but what exactly does that mean?

What is the Pitch on a FFC Cable?

The pitch is the distance measured between the center of one conductor to the center of the neighboring conductor on an FFC. Some of the common measurements you might see in relation to a cable’s pitch include 0.5mm, 1.0mm and 1.25mm, although custom cables can be made with variable pitch length. Custom pitch and multiple pitch flat flexible cables are available upon special request, and Quadrangle Products specializes in manufacturing custom cables for our clients.

Twisted Pair Cable

Twisted pair cable designs are used in many of the custom cable products designed and manufactured at Quadrangle Products Inc. Twisted pairs are used to transfer data at high speeds and the design is utilized in many types of display cables in a variety of industries. The use of twisted pairs reduces electromagnetic interference which allows signals to travel longer distances at higher transmission rates. Using a twisted pair is typically more cost effective than using a coax wire, making it a popular choice for display cables.

What is a Twisted Pair Cable?

A twisted pair is a type of cable made by putting two separate insulated wires together in a twisted pattern and running them parallel to each other. This type of cable is widely used in different types of data and voice infrastructures.

What Cable Types Utilize Twisted Pair Cables?

Twisted pair design can be found in many different types of cables and wires, including:

  • LVDS cables
  • eDP cables
  • DVI cables
  • Displayport cables
  • Telecommunications cables such as ethernet cabling
  • USB type cables including USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and USB-C

Unshielded Twisted Pair Cable Vs Shielded Twisted Pair Cable

Experts typically cite that twisted pair cabling is often used to help avoid certain kinds of signal interference. There are two different types of twisted pairs, unshielded twisted pair (UTP) and shielded twisted pair (STP), which are used in different kinds of installations.

Shielded twisted pairs have an individual shield wrapped around the twisted pair. The shield is generally made of foil with a drain wire running through it. An unshielded twisted pair has no shield. UTP is common in ethernet installations, while STP is used in various kinds of networks to prevent crosstalk and electromagnetic interference. STP cable can also help to provide grounding.

Advantages of Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP)

Using an unshielded twisted pair over the shielded twisted pairs is often a cost saving decision. Unshielded twisted pairs also allow for more flexibility in a cable jacket.

Advantages of Shielded Twisted Pair (STP)

Shielded twisted pairs help further reduce electrometric interference especially at longer cable distances and faster transmission rates.

What Type of Twisted Pair is Used in LVDS Cables?

Some good pre-twisted overall shielded cables are UL20276 and the Low Voltage Zero Halogen (LVZH) UL21104 wire. UL wires such as UL1571 28AWG and UL3767 28 AWG can be twisted for LVDS cables. If you have a custom twisted pair in mind, Quadrangle Products is always happy to work with our clients to design a custom cable that suits their needs.

What is the Difference Between a FFC and FPC?

FFCs and FPCs are often confused as they look very similar, both are flat, and they both transfer data. However, they are very different.

  • FFCs typically must have conductors that are straight through with pinouts that are either 1 to 1, or 1-n.
  • FPCs on the other hand can have a variety of pinouts as they can be multi-layered with conductors that cross over each other. FPCs can also be impedance controlled which makes them a better choice for data cables such as LVDS. FPCs can also be designed to have bends and angles, rather than just being rectangular.

Selecting using an FPC or FFC would depend on what application you will be using it for. We can help you select the right cable for your purposes.

What Does the “Pitch” of an FFC or FPC Mean?

The pitch is the distance between the center of one conductor to the center of the conductor next to it.

What is an FFC/FPC Connector?

FFC and FPCs can mate to very common ZIF (zero insertion force) type connectors. FPCs can have connectors mounted to the conductors on the FPC. We also stock FFC/FPC to Round Wire connectors. Quadrangle Products can help suggest connectors for your application.

Do You Stock FFCs and FPCs?

LCD Touchscreen Cable Extensions

With the rise of tablets and smartphones, touch screens have become a part of our everyday lives. Quadrangle Products understands that touchscreen cable extensions are a product our clients will need in many of their projects and have experience helping people find exactly what they need for their specific situation.

Uses for LCD Touchscreen Cable Extensions

In many cases you will find that Touchscreens (PCAP) have a cable already attached the unit that does not have a long enough length to reach your Touchscreen Controller. At Quadrangle Products we have a line of products to increase the length of your LCD Touchscreen’s Flat Flexible Cable (Ribbon Cable) using one of our many Touchscreen Extensions. We can help guide you through the process of determining which one will work best for your needs.

LCD Touchscreen Extension Kits

At Quadrangle Products Inc. we offer many of the most common types of Touchscreen Extensions off the shelf and we can custom build you one as well if you require it.

The most common conductor pitches that we stock are 0.5mm and 1.00mm in a variety of lengths.

Micro Coax Cables

As technology continues to get smaller and gain more functionality, cable technology must also adapt in order to keep up. eDp cables are an example of this quickly changing world of technology. Embedded DisplayPort (commonly referred to as eDP) is based on the VESA DisplayPort Standard. Embedded DisplayPort is a high performance audio/visual interface developed through the personal computer industry which allows displays to display in 4k and beyond. eDP cables have become a popular replacement for LVDS display cables which have been the standard since the mid 1990s.

What You Should Know About eDP Cables

With a lot of new technology, eDP cables provide benefits that older model cables cannot. Many LCD manufacturers are moving to adding eDP(Embedded DisplayPort) interface on their LCDs for this very reason. eDP interface allows higher transmission speeds as opposed to LVDS cables. eDP also uses less conductors on your cable design reducing space and possible cost depending on the design.

Another benefit of eDP cabels is that they allow you to easily connect your source (such as a person computer) directly to an LCD.

Quadrangle Products can also build Custom eDP or DisplayPort cables if you design requires it. We have strong relationships with many LCD manufactures that utilize the eDP interface and can provide guidance on your cable design. We also offer many Standard Stock eDP cables off the shelf that can ship Same or Next Day.

Advantages and Common Uses of eDP Cables

What are some of the advantages of eDP cables over other models and when are they most useful? Here is a brief breakdown to give you a good idea if eDP cables are right for your project.

eDP Cable Advantages

  • Smaller than similar cable varieties
  • Require fewer connections than LVDS assemblies
  • All power, data, and control through one single assembly

eDP Cable Common Uses

  • Laptops
  • Personal Computers
  • HD Displays (monitors, TVs, etc.)

Quadrangle Products now supports eDP, DisplayPort, and Mini DisplayPort style cables. An increasing number of LCD panels are starting to incorporate the eDP style display interface for their display data connections, as opposed to the more commonly seen LVDS/TTL interfaces. Quadrangle products is tooled for common eDP, and standard DisplayPort connectors. We are also starting to carry stock on the more common eDP cables. As always, custom eDP/DP cables are also a possibility. Quadrangle's Engineers will help to guide customers through the various design and construction challenges that can be associated with eDP and DisplayPort Cables.

The previous RT-700G kits had a maximum conductor count of 50 positions. With our new FPC (QD16500AD), we have expanded the maximum conductor count up to 80 positions. These adapters are the necessary link for solutions which involve a 0.50mm pitch FFC/FPC peripheral that needs to be converted to round discrete wires. The kits are provided with UL1571 28AWG flying discrete leads that can then be applied to standard crimped and poked style connectors. Contact us for more information!

Quadrangle Products is pleased to announce we are now tooled for the following connectors and crimp terminals:

  • The JST ZPDR series of connectors, as well as the JST SZPD series of crimp terminals
  • The JST SHJP series of connectors, as well as the JST SSHJ series of crimp terminals
  • The CviLux CI14 series backlight power connectors, as well as the CI14T series of crimp terminals.

Quadrangle has acquired a new Cross Linked 28AWG Halogen (PVC) FREE hookup wire which can be used seamlessly, and interchangeably with the much more standard and common UL1571 PVC wire. In an effort to set the curve and continue to set an example as industry innovators, Quadrangle has begun implementing this wire 2 years prior to the pending environmental, health and RoHS 2 requirements.

Inquire with our Engineering team if you would like to hear more about this new product. We can answer any questions you might have about these cables in relation to the more common PVC wire models.

What Are Halogens?

Halogens are non-metallic elements found in the periodic table. The five halogens are fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine and astatine. A commonly used material that contains halogens in the chemical structure is PVC. Halogens make wire and cable jackets and insulation highly flame retardant. Some naturally non-halogenated materials have halogen added because of the flame-retardant properties. When burned, halogens will emit a thick toxic smoke and become corrosive. These characteristics can cause damage to equipment and pose a safety concern.

Why Consider Halogen-Free Cable?

In recent years, halogen-free wire and cable products have seen an increase in popularity. Halogen-free wires and cables are used in consideration of issues, including fire safety, fire damage prevention and environmental impact. Halogen-free products help eliminate the need to use environmentally sensitive materials.

Quadrangle has proudly moved toward providing our customers with halogen-free products in an attempt to be more environmentally friendly and in an effort to provide our wire and cable clients with a safer alternative to the wires and cables that have been the standard in the past.
